How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

get haircutYour daily hair care routine is not the only thing that’s responsible for the health of your hair. Knowing when to get your haircut depending on your hair type can also help you fast-track your way to a great hair day everyday.

Note that your hair grows at an average speed of half an inch every four weeks. The rate may be faster or slower for some people but that doesn’t discount the fact that aside from the products you use for your hair in the shower, getting regular haircuts does a lot to keep your hair sleek and strong.

But how often should you get a haircut? Here are a few pointers to remember depending on the length of your hair:

If you have long hair, get a haircut every 8 to 12 weeks

Because long hair is old, it’s essential to keep it away from breakage. Most people think that if they don’t get a haircut on a regular basis, their hair will grow faster. When in fact, if you have long hair and you avoid visiting the barber shop or salon, the chances for split ends and breakage are bigger.

If you want to keep your hair long without looking like a mess, have your hair trimmed at least every 8 to 12 weeks. If your hair still breaks, get a haircut as frequently as every 6 to 8 weeks.

When you get your haircut, make sure that your stylist understands what you want. If you want your hair to grow even longer, ask your stylist to trim just half an inch or less. On the other hand, if you simply want to maintain your current hair length, tell your stylist to trim about an inch off the ends.

If you have medium-length hair, get a haircut every 6 to 12 weeks

The interval to getting haircuts for those with medium hair differs little from those who have long hair. Medium hair, while it’s not as susceptible to breakage than long hair could still break and get damaged due to styling and other environmental factors. So it’s important to keep your hair strong by having it trimmed regularly.

If you like to keep the length of your hair, getting a haircut at 6 to 8 week intervals is ideal. But if you want your hair to grow a little longer over time, try getting a trim every 8 to 12 weeks.

If you have short hair, get a haircut every 4 to 8 weeks

A lot of men like keeping their hair short because it’s easier to style. However, it’s just as hard to maintain.  If you want to keep your hair clean cut, you will need to get a haircut more frequently to keep up your style.

Visit your barber shop or salon every 4 to 8 weeks to keep your hairstyle fresh.
