What causes oily hair?

Hair becomes oily because of sebum, the natural oil that moisturizes the skin and scalp. When your scalp produces excess sebum, your hair becomes oily and limp. Overproduction of sebum is caused by different factors like hormonal imbalance, genetics, diet, as well as changes in the weather.

Hair care products with harsh ingredients can also cause oily hair. Ingredients like silicone and certain oils found in shampoos and styling products can leave your hair greasy. Oily hair can also attract dust particles in the air, making your tresses dirty.

Here are hair care tips that can help prevent oily hair:

1. Use clarifying shampoo to cleanse your hair.
Clarifying shampoo will thoroughly cleanse your hair of dirt and excess oils. Massage it gently on your scalp and let it sit for at least 3 minutes before rinsing. Do this at least once a month.

2. Start using a gentle shampoo.
Look for a mild shampoo that does not contain ingredients like lanolin and petroleum that can make hair oily. Also choose a shampoo that doesn’t contain oils that can give you greasy hair.

3. Always rinse your hair thoroughly.
You can get oily hair from shampoo or conditioner that’s left on your hair. Residue from hair products like gel and hair spray can also cause oily hair. So always make sure to wash your hair thoroughly before you step out of the shower.

4. Don’t touch your hair too often.
Touching your hair frequently can actually stimulate oil production. Natural oils from your fingers can also wind up on your hair. So avoid touching your locks once you’re done styling.

5. Avoid excessive use of styling products.
Using too much hair gel, mousse, or hair spray actually makes your hair greasy. It might look good in the morning, but your locks can become too oily when you use too much hair product.

6. Choose styling products with less oil.
Stay away from products with shine-enhancing ingredients on the label. To minimize oil on your scalp, choose styling products with volumizing properties. They contain less oil that won’t make your hair greasy and limp.

Now that you know these hair care tips, you can keep your locks from becoming oily. When your hair is no longer oily, you can style your hair easily and add more volume to your locks.
