In today’s fast-paced world, it’s no surprise that there are quick solutions for just about everything, including hair care. One quick fix that has been gaining popularity in the recent years is the use of dry shampoo.

What is dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo is a powder-like substance that is sprinkled into the hair, then massaged into the scalp. You let the shampoo seep in for a minute or two to let it absorb the oil on your scalp, and you’re good to go. For those who need to refresh in less than a minute, dry shampoo is a quick and easy solution.

However, like most things, dry shampoo has its pros and cons. If you’re considering using dry shampoo for washing your hair, here are some of its main advantages and disadvantages:

Pros

  • It goes without saying that dry shampoo is a major convenience, especially for those who are in a rush and have no time to wash their hair, shampoo and water. You just sprinkle the powder, wait for a minute, then style it with a brush. Easy, isn’t it?
  • Fights grease. One of the biggest advantages of dry shampoo is that it’s perfect for fighting grease. Because it’s in powder form, it easily absorbs grease when applied. It’s also a great “spot treater”, like for when you have greasy bangs.
  • Extends the life of a blowout. If you’d like to keep salon-styled hair for a bit longer, dry shampoo is the way to go. It’s also great for color-treated hair because dry shampoo doesn’t contribute to color loss and fading as much as regular shampoo does.

Cons

  • It’s not for everyone. If you have dry hair, or if you’re suffering from a dandruff problem, using dry shampoo can worsen the condition of your hair and scalp.
  • Dusty residue. Some types of dry shampoo can leave dusty or whitish residue on your hair, which is particularly visible on dark hair.
  • You have to be careful with the brand of dry shampoo you’re using, as well as how you apply it. The wrong kind or the wrong application can make your hair look really dry and dull.

Dry shampoo is a major convenience, but it does have some negatives. For these reasons, it is recommended that you use it only when needed and not on a regular basis.
