5 Hair-Washing Mistakes You May Be Making
Washing your hair is something that comes naturally to us, something that seems so easy to do. But doing it the wrong way can lead to hair problems like hair fall, dryness, and greasy roots
Having healthy hair starts in the shower. From the temperature of the water to how long it takes to wash your hair. It is the little things that are easily overlooked that sometimes are the ones that matter.
Take note of these hair-washing mistakes you might be making without you knowing and how you can correct them:
Mistake #1: Water is too hot.
There’s nothing more relaxing than enjoying a hot shower after a long day. While it calms the body, it also can cause your hair to frizz. Hot water opens the hair cuticle that allows natural moisturizing factors and keratin proteins to escape, causing frizziness. Opt for lukewarm water instead.
Mistake #2: Not soaking your hair thoroughly before applying shampoo.
Did you know that it is important to completely wet your hair first before lathering it with shampoo? This ensures that your hair gets cleaned properly. You might be inclined to cut corners when you’re in a rush. But a quick soak is not enough to get your hair thoroughly wet and will only make your shampoo less effective.
Mistake #3: Aggressively scrubbing your scalp.
Be gentle when you wash your hair. Remember that wet hair is more prone to breakage and that harsh scrubbing can cause the scalp to overproduce oil, resulting to greasy hair.
Mistake #4: Applying shampoo and conditioner on the wrong areas.
Shampoo and conditioner have different purposes and should be applied appropriately in different areas of your head. Shampoo cleanses and should only be applied at the hair roots or in areas that get dirty. Conditioner, on the other hand, should be applied at the mid-lengths to the ends where hair becomes particularly drier.
Mistake #5: Using shampoo with sulfates.
Sulfates are responsible for making it easier to spread shampoo to your hair. Continuous use of shampoos with sulfates can have a long-term damaging effect such as dryness. It can also strip your hair of essential oils. Switch to sulfate-free shampoos that are proven to be the healthier option for hair care.
